Biking Guemes Island

August 16, 2009

Guemes Island (“gwee’-mus”) is just a five minute ferry ride from Anacortes. It’s quiet there, laid back, with great views and little road traffic, perfect for a bike ride.

What we didn’t fully appreciate was how hilly it was. The southern end of the island as viewed from Anacortes looks so flat! (Click on images below to enlarge.)

It turns out that our planned 15 mile ride had almost 2000 feet of vertical elevation gain!

We rode up the western side of the island, across the top but then scooted straight down the middle skipping the last stretch over to the southeast corner. We ate our lunch on a driftwood log while waiting for the ferry to take us back to Anacortes, happy, tired, sore and maybe a little wiser!

An article “Guemes Island: This unspoiled San Juan island is a laid-back retreat” by Greg Johnston – Seattle P-I Reporter says that “the riding is pretty much flat” and includes this picture of flatness.
